Employers have been urged not to ignore the wellbeing of their middle managers, after the latest figures show that they are the group most at risk from suffering stress. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development's (CIPD) quarterly 'Employee Outlook' reveals that 49 per cent of middle managers report being under excessive pressure, either every day or once or twice a week.
Middle managers were also reported to have the least satisfaction with their work-life balance, with only 44 per cent agreeing that they get this balance right.
The CIPD says that it important for employers to take this into consideration.
Ben Willmott, head of public policy at the institute, told HR Magazine: "It is also important that employers don't ignore the health and wellbeing of their middle managers.
"They are particularly at risk of suffering from work-related stress and burnout."
As well as helping employees to reduce their stress levels, employers have a number of other obligations towards their workers' wellbeing.
For instance, firms must have employer's liability in place as part of their business insurance policy.
