Insurers praised for post-riot results

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has praised insurers for responding "swiftly" to the riots that took place across England last summer.

London was worst hit by the uprising, which also spread to other cities and towns, including Manchester and Birmingham, and saw gangs of youths setting fire to and looting premises.

In the six months since the outbreak of violence, the ABI says that more than 70 per cent of business insurance claims for property damage have been settled or interim payments handed out.

Post-riot household settlements are in excess of 80 per cent.

Nick Starling, director of general insurance at the ABI, said: "Insurers responded swiftly to the summer riots, providing help and assistance to customers.

"The bulk of outstanding riot claims are for large commercial customers."

The ABI advises that most commercial insurance policies will cover for damage caused by fire and looting, but also that it is important for businesses to check their policy's terms and conditions. ADNFCR-16000414-ID-801287899-ADNFCR
