Pubs warned about showing foreign football

The continuing saga regarding the right to show foreign football feeds in British pubs has taken another turn, with the High Court issuing a ruling that both sides are claiming as a victory.

Last week, Lord Justice Kitchin ruled that pubs who show decoded foreign football channels may have breached the Premier League's copyright.

He said: "The defendants who are continuing to trade must be entitled to carry on their business in a way that avoids infringement of [Premier League] copyright if they are able to."

This left both sides claiming a result; with the Premier League vowing to pursue those who show football "without our authority" and a lawyer representing the defendants saying they were "pleased" the majority of claims had been dismissed.

The case of Hampshire licensee Karen Murphy, who has been involved in a lengthy battle for the right to show football from foreign suppliers, will be heard on the February 24th.
