Younger workers 'tend not to ask for help'

Companies might wish to review their business insurance policies to cover extra training and skills workshops in order to equip their staff with the tools they need to complete work effectively.

Kevin Friery, clinical director at Right Corecare, noted that young employees who have recently left college or university are beginning to learn work-related skills but tend not to ask for extra help.

"Part of the reason for that is that they are a bit less confident about asking for help because they don't want to be seen as having difficulties; they want to portray themselves as being very competent, confident and able because they see that as how their career will progress better," he pointed out.

"They need nurturing."

Mr Friery's comments come after the GfK NOP International Employee Engagement Survey 2011 found 39 per cent of workers aged 18 to 29 are suffering from stress and pressure at work.
